Sometimes it baffles me why places are named differently in various languages. One of the reasons behind it is probably that centuries ago the world was 'smaller' due to the lack of instant communication methods and modern ways of transportation. One had to travel for weeks or months to get to certain places that one had only vaguely heard off in the first place.

In my own language (Dutch) it sometimes is just a small difference, to make it better pronouncable. For instance: we spell Londen, which in Dutch sounds like London. But then again we say Parijs, which sounds like Par-ICE.

But in some languages it is taken to a whole other level. The German city of München is called Munich in English, but Italians rather confusingly say Monaco. But it's not always the Italians that go overboard, because also in English there are some interesting choices of place names. Which brings us to Leghorn (/ˈlɛɡhɔːn), known as Livorno to the Italians and the rest of the World.
